History
Proof striking, struck for collectors and sold separately from circulating coinage — a distinct coin from the 1878 business-strike Morgan Dollar. The 1878-P proofs occur in three varieties (collector-estimated mintages, not Mint-reported): 8 Tail Feathers ~500; 7 Tail Feathers, Reverse of 1878 ~250; 7 Tail Feathers, Reverse of 1879 ~500. These were three separate cards until Block 351 collapsed them here — the tail-feather (8TF / 7-8TF) and reverse-hub (Reverse of 1878 / 1879) designation chips label each variety's asks on this one card.
