History

Proof striking. Proofs were struck for collectors and sold separately from circulating coinage; this is a distinct coin from the 1874 Gold Dollar Type 3 (Indian Princess Large Head). Mintage cleared to VERIFY: this card had inherited 198,800 from its business-strike sibling at clone time. NGC lists both an MS and a PF row for this date, so both coins are real, but 198,800 is the BUSINESS figure and is not this proof's mintage.
