Proof striking (TYPE 1). Proofs were struck for collectors and sold separately from circulating coinage; this is a distinct coin from the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Mintage from the source: "Lange observed of this issue, "If someone has not had the opportunity to examine Type 1 proofs, these may easily be confused with very well struck currency pieces."
